Daisy writes: 'Researching this book was a joy. I became engrossed in the rivalry between the Duke of Windsor (formerly Edward VIII) and his younger brother, Bertie, who became George VI when Edward abdicated to marry the American, Wallis Simpson. Both men appear briefly in the story, as do the young princesses, Elizabeth and Margaret Rose. At first I felt reluctant to write about people who actually existed, but I hope I've done our late Queen justice. It was such a treat to visit Windsor Castle, sit in the Round Tower itself and read papers from the Royal Archive about life in the castle during the war - including menus for luncheon and dinner every day! It must have seemed the ideal place to shelter when the bombs were falling, but the threat to the Royal Family was very real. Various plans existed for escape routes they might take if Britain was invaded. It was also suggested that the Queen and her daughters might spend the war in Canada but she refused to leave her husband. The close family stayed together, the royal couple spending the week in London and visiting their daughters in Windsor at the weekends.
