The Banned Books of Berlin

About

Berlin, 1933 The night skies are burning bright with huge bonfires of banned books. The Nazi party is swelling in number and Berlin is no longer a safe place for young Freya.

She can only watch on, horrified, as her beloved city falls to Fascism - and the usually law-abiding Freya is forced to make a choice: continue being a bystander, or put her life on the line to stand up for her ideals, her future and the country she loves...

Los Angeles, present day Maddie's a journalist, facing a different kind of censorship as she's trolled on social media. Taking a break from the abuse to visit her family, she's surprised to come across a pre-war German diary amongst her Grandpa’s things. And when she starts to dig into the diary, Maddie’s shocked by what she finds.

Gradually she uncovers the extraordinary truth about her great-grandmother, Freya, and what she did on the very night thousands of books were burned across Germany and it looked as though civilisation was coming to an end.

Daisy writes: 'My other books have been set during the Second World War but this one features Hitler's rise to power in the early 1930s, and the insidious steps by which he made opposition increasingly difficult. I tried not to draw too obvious a parallel between the Nazis burning books and what is happening in countries across the world today. It occurred to me that we also censor ourselves nowadays, being reluctant to express opinions because of the reaction they might provoke online. It's difficult to discuss certain topics because of the abuse that's bound to result, which is a sad state of affairs. This story is a plea for tolerance, acceptance and kindness, and a reminder that we ignore the lessons of the past at our peril.'
